Women's Tennis Defeats Aquinas, 6-1

The Providence College Friars tennis team defeated Aquinas College,6-1, on Thursday, March 13, in Bermuda. In singles action, Providence's No. 1 freshman Cheri Lapane (Reading, Mass.) defeated Kara Ferguson, 6-2, 6-4, while PC's No. 2, freshman Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) defeated Carey Stibbs in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. PC's No. 3, sophomore Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) defeated Katie Kroft, 6-1, 6-1. Providence's No. 4, sophomore Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) defeated Sara Peterson in a hard fought match, 6-3, 7-6. Sophomore Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) playing in the No. 5 slot for Providence defeated Ashley Rivers, 6-0, 6-1. In the final singles slot PC's No. 6 senior Katie Viola (South Hadley, Mass.) defeated Sandy Brakel in a tie-breaker, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 to sweep the singles portion of the match for the Friars. In doubles action, the No.1 team of Lapane and Bitetti fell to Ferguson and Kroft, 9-7, while the No. 2 team of Gilbride and Christensen defeated Stibbs and Peterson, 8-2. In the final match of the day the No. 3 doubles team of Rodger and Viola were defeated by Rivers and Brakel, 9-8. The Friars return to action on Saturday, March 29 as the travel to Stony Brook, N.Y. for a match against the University of Stony Brook at 1:00 p.m.
