Women's Tennis Falls To The College Of New Jersey, 4-3

The Providence College Friars were defeated by The College of New Jersey, 4-3, on Wednesday, March 12, in Bermuda. In singles action, Providence's No. 1 freshman Cheri Lapane (Reading, Mass.) defeated Kelly Hernandez in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. PC's No. 2, freshman Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) fell to Kristen Klepacki in a tie-breaker, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6. PC's No. 3, sophomore Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) was also defeated in a tie-breaker by Jackie Gavomik, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. Providence's No. 4, sophomore Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) defeated Katie D'Anato in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) earned the Friars' third and final victory playing in the No. 5 slot as she defeated Kelli Emery, 6-3, 6-1. In the final singles slot PC's No. 6 senior Katie Viola (South Hadley, Mass.) was defeated by Katie Richards, 6-4, 7-5. In doubles action, The No.1 team of Lapane and Bitetti fell to Hernadez and Emery, 9-8, while the No. 2 team of Gilbride and Christensen were defeated by Gavomik and Klepacki, 8-2. In the final match of the day Rodger and Viola were defeated by Richards and D'Anato, 9-8. in a tough match.
