Smithfield, R.I. - The Providence women's tennis team hosted Rutgers University on Saturday, February 17 at the Rally Point Racquet Club in Smithfield, R.I. The Friars fell to the Scarlet Knights, 7-0 in their spring home opener. In the first doubles match up, Providence sophomore Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.) and freshman Allison Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y.) were able to take two points from Rutgers' Anela Dujsic and Katherine Arlak, but Rutgers prevailed, winning 8-2. In singles action, Rissolo and sophomore Meghan Gilroy (Fairfield, Conn.) competing at first and second singles, respectively, each took one point from their opponent. Both fell 6-0, 6-1 to their Rutgers opponents. Cohen grabbed two points from Dujsic at fourth singles, but lost 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Jen Cusack (Bayport, New York) fell 6-1, 6-1 against Rutgers' Christine Tran. Head Coach Wayne Turner was pleased with his team's effort as they stepped up their level of play. With the loss, the Friars hold an 0-3 spring record, and a 4-4 combined record. The Friars head to Fort Lauderdale Fla. over spring break (March 3-11) where they will match up against Cincinatti on March 9 at 4:00 p.m. and Nova Southeastern on March 10 at 11:00 a.m.
