PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team hosted the Fairfield Stags on Saturday, Feb.8. The Friars fell, 4-3, to the Stags in what was a close tough fought match.
Play kicked off with doubles action at the Centre Court Tennis Club in East Providence, R.I. Senior Maria Clara Bernadez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and sophomore Hannah Zangari(Saunderstown, R.I.) competed in the No. 1 doubles position, where the duo fell to Monica Yajima and Allison Radde, 6-1.
Sophomore Alana Prinos(Foxborough, Mass.) and freshman Jennifer DeLuca(Riverside, Conn.) freshman competed in the No. 2 doubles position for the Friars. Hogan and Pitocco fell, 6-4, to Sharissa Ryan and Victoria Pirrello. With the two losses, the Friars trailed 1-0 heading into singles play.
Bernardez and Yajima faced in No. 1 singles, with Bermardez falling (6-3, 6-4) in the match. Prinos competed in the No. 2 singles position, where she fell (6-4, 6-4) to Ryan.
At No. 3 singles, DeLuca defeated Radde (6-5, 6-2) as the Friars continued to battle back.
Junior Karen Ramirez(San Juan, Puerto Rico) was defeated by Kailia Nelson (6-2, 6-3) in the No. 4 singles position.
In No. 5 and 6 singles the Friars earned their final wins on the day from Zangari and sophomore Olivia Hogan (Gaithersburg, Md.). Zangari competed at the No. 5 position, where she toppled Pirrello (6-4, 6-1). In the No. 6 position, Hogan defeated Karen McKeough (6-3, 6-0).
The Friars are back in action March 1, when Providence and Brown face-off.
