Men's And Women's Swimming And Diving Finished Second and Third At Harold Anderson Invitational

NORTH KINGSTON, R.I. -- The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished third and second, respectively, at the two-day Harold Anderson Invitational held at the University of Rhode Island. The PC women's team finished second with a total of 287 points behind URI, which won the event. The PC men finished third with 258.50 points finishing third behind URI, which won, and Holy Cross, who finished second. Sophomore Kathryn Donovan (Simi Valley, Calif.) qualified for the ECAC's in three events after winning the 200 freestyle in 1:59.20, the 500 freestyle in 5:16.67 and by finishing third in the 5000 freestyle in 10:53.95. Other event winners for the Providence women were junior Kate Fuller (Staten Island, N.Y.), who won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:11.63 and senior Lee Barnum (Hyde Park, N.Y.), who won the 200 yard butterfly in 2:14.87. Also scoring for the PC women were Barnum, who finished second in the 200 yard IM in 2:17.90, senior Allison Buckley (Chelmsford, Mass.), who finished third in the 200 yard backstroke in 2:17.14 and Kate Fuller, who finished second in the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:32.29. On the men's side, sophomore Patrick Franzen (Taftsville, Vt.) was the only individual winner, claiming the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:03.96. Other men who scored were senior Keith Chobot (Randolph, N.J.), who finished fourth in the 1,000 yard freestyle in 11:09.10 and second in the 200 yard breast in 2:22.49, sophomore Patrick Kavanaugh (Newburgh, N.Y.) finished third in the 200 yard freestyle in 1:47.75, sophomore Bryan Flynn (Middletown, R.I.) finished third in the 100 yard backstroke in 57.90, senior David Applegate (Wallingford, Conn.) finished fourth in the 200 yard butterfly in 2:11.33, senior Mike Maloney (Plainville, Mass.) finished fourth in the one meter dive with a score of 179 and junior Tom Darrow (Cranston, R.I.) finished second in the 200 yard backstroke in 2:05.01. The Friars swimming teams return to action on January 12 at the St. Croix Pentathlon. |
