BURLINGTON, VT. - The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed against Vermont on February 1 in Burlington, Vt. The men's team captured their third victory of the season with a 113-79 win over the Catamounts. The women's team was defeated, 135-108.

In men's action, the Friars earned first-place finishes in every event versus the Catamounts, and were led by junior Patrick Kavanagh (Newburgh, N.Y.) and freshman Matthew Raske (New Rochelle, N.Y.) who each earned two individual first-place finishes. Kavanagh won the 1,000 yard freestyle event with a time of 10:39.47, and also claimed victory in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:02.93. Raske finished first in the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 23.47 and won the 100 yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 50.96. Also earning first-place finishes for the Friars were freshman Seth Brockman (Kenner, La.), senior Tom Darrow (Cranston, R.I.), freshman Frank LaMonaca (Cheshire, Conn.) and junior Bryan Flynn (Middletown, R.I.). Brockman won the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:51.56. Darrow earned first place in the 200 yard individual medley (2:07.15), LaMonaca claimed victory in the 100 yard butterfly (59.02) and Flynn finished first in the 100 yard backstroke (56.23). The Friars also got a first-place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:43.46. The relay team was composed of Flynn, junior Patrick Franzen (Taftsville, Vt.), Darrow and Brockman.

On the women's side, junior Bridget McKenna (Narragansett, R.I.) led the Friars with two first-place individual finishes. McKenna won the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:26.18, and took first-place in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:26.84. Senior Kate Fuller (Staten Island, N.Y.), freshman Jill Fortier (East Haddam, Conn.) and sophomore diver Jamie Modon-Cohen (Yorktown, N.Y.) also contributed first-place individual finishes to the Friar effort. Fuller won the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 25.76. Fortier claimed victory in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:13.11, and Modon-Cohen won the one-meter diving event. The women's team returns to action on Saturday, February 8 in Fairfield, Conn. as they face Sacred Heart at 1:00 p.m.
