The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed against the University of Maine on Saturday, January 17, 2003. The Friar men posted a 163-122 victory over the Black Bears, while the Friar women were defeated 201-99.
On the men's side, Providence earned victories in two relays and eight individual events. Freshman Andrew Zockoff (Dover, Mass.) led the way with three, first-place finishes in the 200-meter Individual Medley (2:21.61), the 100-meter breaststroke (1:12.00) and the 200-meter breaststroke (2:41.32). Senior Bryan Flynn (Middletown, R.I.) captured two, first-place finishes on the day in the 50-meter freestyle (25.80) and the 200-meter backstroke (2:20.81). Freshman Brian Parker (Rocky Hill, Conn.), freshman Jeff Vollero (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore Seth Brockman (Kenner, La.) won one event each. Parker captured the 800-meter freestyle in a time of 9:21.88, Vollero won the 100-meter backstroke (1:03.37) and Brockman took first in the 100-meter freestyle (56.82). The Friars also won the 200-medley relay (Flynn, Zockoff, Vollero and Brockman) in a time of 1:54.15 and the 200-meter freestyle relay (Vollero, Raske, LaMonaca and Kavanagh) in a time of 1:43.09.
On the women's side, Providence earned first-place finishes in three events in the loss to Maine. Freshman Anne Nemeth
(Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished first in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:19.54. In the one-meter optional diving event, junior Jamie Modon-Cohen
(Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) captured first place with 214.05 points. Lyndsay Taylor (Devonshire, Bermuda), Lori Brezinsky
(Bethlehem, Pa.), Katelyn Flynn
(Sinking Spring, Pa.) and Alyssa Meleski
(Southington, Conn.) teamed up to win the 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 2:00.00.
The Friars will travel to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday, January 24 to compete against the Corsairs at 1:00 p.m.
