Kathy McLaughlin Joins Providence College Softball Staff

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

Kathy McLaughlin joins the Providence College women’s softball team as a graduate assistant coach for the coming season. While at Providence, McLaughlin will be pursuing her masters in counseling.

"I am pleased to announce the addition of Kathy to our coaching staff," Head Coach Kerri Jacklets said. "Kathy had a stellar career at Maryland and earned numerous All-ACC accolades and the ACC batting title in 2012.  She has a proven track record of success in the sport that will be invaluable in our journey and future success in the BIG EAST Conference.  Kathy will be working specifically with our infield, hitters and slappers.  She brings relevant knowledge of the sport and will aid us in how to compete at the highest level in a major conference."

McLaughlin comes to Providence College after spending the last four seasons as a student-athlete at the University of Maryland, where she started as shortstop in 210 of her 215 appearances. Her career .300 batting average is currently No. 7 in Maryland record books, and she led the ACC in overall batting average in 2012 (.385) and batting average in conference games only (.460).

Her .385 season average in 2012 is the third-best single season average in Terrapin history, and her 42 runs is fourth-best in school history.  In 2012, she also was named to the All-ACC First Team.  McLaughlin also ranks No. 3 in the Terps’ career triples list and in single and triples as a sophomore.  In 2010, she was named to ACC’s Academic Honor Roll.  As a freshman, McLaughlin played in 45 games, hit .287 on the year, tied for team-high in doubles and earned a team-high in triples.

Before Maryland, McLaughlin was a three-time All-Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) Conference Nominee, and Seton Keough Athlete of the Year in 2007.  Her team won the IAAM ‘A’ Conference championship.  As a senior, she earned second team All-Metro honors from the Baltimore Sun and was a three-time all-city selection.  At Seton Keogh, she also played basketball and soccer.

McLaughlin is the daughter of Jim and Maureen McLaughlin and has one sibling, Kiel.
