Providence Softball Announces the Hiring of Kate Poppe as New Assistant Coach

July 11, 2017

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College softball head coach Kerri Jacklets announced the hiring of Kate Poppe as the team’s new assistant coach on Tuesday, July 11.

Poppe joins the Providence staff after having spent the last season as an assistant coach at Rider University. Poppe managed the pitching staff and was the main pitch caller for Rider. Her work helped increase the staff’s strikeout to walk ratio from .63 in 2016 to 1.13 in 2017. In addition to working with pitchers, Poppe worked on developing hitters and infielders.  She also assisted in practice, game planning, recruiting, scheduling, alumni relations, and social media.

Prior to Rider, Poppe was a member of the Villanova softball team from 2012 to 2016. Poppe had a stellar career at Villanova. She was a three-time All-BIG EAST selection (2014, 2015, 2016), was named to the NFCA All-Mideast Region Team (2016) and was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year in 2016. A team captain in both 2015 and 2016, Poppe posted a career ERA of 2.52. She pitched five no-hitters in her Wildcat career and holds the Villanova career strikeout record with 977. She graduated from Villanova in the spring of 2016 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and minors in Business Analytics and Entrepreneurship with Cum Laude Honors.

“We are excited to welcome Kate into the Friar Family. Kate was a standout pitcher during her career at Villanova. Her own prowess on the mound along with her familiarity within the BIG EAST will aid her in maximizing the success of our pitching staff,” said Jacklets. “Always humble yet a fiery competitor, we know that Kate will provide an immediate impact to all of our student-athletes.”
