June 5, 2006

Former Providence College softball stars Kate Drohan `95 and her twin sister Caryl Drohan `95 will direct the Northwestern softball team into the Women's College World Series. The Wildcats, who defeated UCLA, 3-1, in eight innings on Sunday, June 4, will face Arizona in a best-of-three championship series beginning on Monday, June 5 at 8:00 p.m. on ESPN2.

For the Wildcats, who improved to 50-13, it marks the first time in school history that they will play for the NCAA Championship in softball. Kate Drohan, who serves as the head coach and Caryl Drohan, who is the associate head coach, are in their fifth season at Northwestern. In four of those five seasons, the Wildcats have made it to the NCAA Tournament. In addition, the 50-win season is the first in school history.

Kate Drohan was a three-time All-BIG EAST Selection (1992, 1994, 1995). She still ranks in the top five all-time at PC in at-bats (651), runs scored (96), hits (179), slugging percentage (.453) and stolen bases (21). Caryl Drohan spent one season as an assistant coach at PC. As a player, she was an All-BIG EAST selection in 1995 and an All-ECAC pick in 1994. She ranks third all-time at PC with 51 walks. In 1994, the Drohan sisters led the team to one of its best seasons in school history. The Friars won the BIG EAST Tournament title and advanced to the NCAAs for the first time in the College's history. In the four years, the Drohan sisters helped lead the Friars to a 145-72 overall record.
