Softball To Host Villanova This Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team is set to play its final three-game series of the 2016 season versus Villanova this weekend.  The Friars will play a double header at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 7 and a single game at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 8.  Prior to the game on Sunday there will be a senior ceremony to honor the five graduating seniors including pitcher Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.), center fielder Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.), first baseman Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) utility Annie DeRosa (Winchester, Mass.), and graduate student infielder Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.).

Softball Falls To Villanova, 2-1
The Providence College softball team fell to Villanova, 2-1, in the final game of their BIG EAST series on Sunday, April 19.

The Friars are currently 20-26 (5-12 BIG EAST) on the season, after coming off of a four game winning streak last week.  The Friars defeated Boston College (7-6) on Wednesday, April 27 and had a three-game sweep versus Georgetown on April 29 and May 1.  Sophomore Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors on May 2 for her efforts.  The third baseman tallied eight RBI and went 6-for-14 at the plate with two doubles and one home run.  Freshman Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) leads the Friars, batting .431.  She has tallied 56 hits and 17 RBI. 

Freshman Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.), who has made 18 appearances on the mound, has a team best 2.90 ERA.  This past week, sophomore Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) tallied three wins and held a 1.75 ERA in three games.  For Ramirez’s efforts, she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

SCOUTING VILLANOVA:  The Wildcats are 30-16 (12-5 BIG EAST) on the season, coming off of a split weekend versus Butler.  Villanova defeated Butler in game one (1-0) on Saturday, but was defeated in game two (7-6).  Aleshia Ayers leads the Wildcats in batting with a .382 batting average, she has tallied 34 hits and 16 RBI.  With 56 hits, Lau Herschber leads the team in hits, she has also tallied 33 RBI.

Kate Poppe, who has made 30 appearances on the mound, is holding a 2.74 ERA and a 19-11 record.  With a 2.50 ERA, Jordan Prutzer has a team best ERA in 64.1 innings.
