Softball Set For Senior Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team will host a three-game weekend series against the DePaul Blue Demons on May 5-6. The Friars will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 5 with games at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Providence will close out the series with a BEDN game on Sunday, May 6 at 11:00 a.m. The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader will also be the team’s senior game. The senior celebration will begin shortly before the national anthem on Saturday.

The Providence College Friars are 13-29 on the season and have a record of 6-11 in BIG EAST play. The team currently sits in sixth place in the conference standings. They last played a single game on Tuesday, May 1 when the defeated the Central Connecticut Blue Devils, 8-6.

The Friars have relied upon Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.), Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) and Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) to lead their offense this season. Rurka leads the team in batting average (.337) and doubles (10). Lee leads the team in hits (44) and runs scored (23) while also recording a .317 batting average. Veler has been the main power threat for Providence. On the season, Veler has eight doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 30 RBI and a .585 slugging percentage.

The trio has also been  effective against BIG EAST opponents. In conference play, Lee ranks second in hits (22), tied for fourth in runs scored (13) and seventh in batting average (.373). Rurka ranks tied for first in doubles (six), sixth in hits (19) and seventh in on base percentage (.469). Veler leads the league in home runs (six) and RBI (17) and is fifth in slugging percentage (.661).

Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) has been the ace of the Providence pitching staff. Ramirez has appeared in 24 games this season and has a 7-13 record, a 3.40 ERA, has struck out 71 batters and has held opponents to a .293 batting average.

The Providence pitching staff has the third best ERA in the BIG EAST against conference teams. In BIG EAST play, the Friars hold opponents to a 3.31 ERA and a .272 batting average. Ramirez has the third best ERA amongst all BIG EAST pitchers as she has a 2.94 ERA against BIG EAST opponents. 

The DePaul Blue Demons have a 30-15 overall record and are 12-3 in BIG EAST play. The Blue Demons are first in the conference standings.

The team has three players with batting averages above .300 on the season. Kate Polucha leads the team with a .388 batting average, 59 hits, 29 runs scored and also has 11 doubles on the season. Morgan Greenwood has also been effective as she is batting .323 with 42 hits, 12 doubles, six home runs and 27 RBI. Angela Scalzitti is the final Blue Demon batting above .300 (.302) and has 39 hits on the season as well. Scalzitti has to be watched on the bases as she has stolen nine bases this season.

Pat Moore and Missy Zoch have split starting pitching duties all season for the Blue Demons. Both have started 14 games this season. Moore has an 11-5 record with an ERA of 2.05 and 140 strikeouts and has held batters to a .199 batting average. Zoch has an ERA of 2.06 ERA to go with a 13-5 record, 113 strikeouts, and has held batters to a .195 batting average.
