Softball To Host St. John’s For Three-Game Series

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team is set to host the St. John’s Red Storm for a three game series on April 28-29. The Friars will play two games against the Red Storm on Saturday, April 28 with the first game to start at 12:00 p.m., followed by the second game at 2:00 p.m. Providence will then finish the series with a single game on Sunday, April 29 at 12:00 p.m.

The Providence Friars have a record of 11-27 on the season and are 5-9 in league play. The Friars currently sit in sixth in the BIG EAST standings.

Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) leads the Providence offensive efforts. Rurka leads the team in batting average (.347) and doubles (10). Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) has also been played a large role in the offense. Lee is currently batting .307 with 39 hits and six doubles.

Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) has been the power bat for the Friars and has been especially hot lately. In the last 10 games, Veler has hit five home runs and tallied 12 RBI. Overall on the season, Veler has a .298 batting average with seven doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 28 RBI.

Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) has seen the bulk of the starts on the mound for Providence. In 12 starts and 18 appearances, Ramirez has a 5-12 record with a 3.74 ERA and has struck out 55 batters. Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) has also seen a lot of starts in the pitcher’s circle for the Friars. In 12 starts, Trinidad has a 3-9 record with a 2.93 ERA. 

The St. John’s Red Storm have a record of 18-24 on the season. The Red Storm are 7-5 in BIG EAST play and currently in a three way tie for third place in the league.

Krystal Puga has been the top offensive weapon for the Red Storm. She leads the team in overall batting average (.431), runs scored (42), hits (59), home runs (16), RBI (38) and slugging percentage (.854). Behind Puga, St. John’s has five other batters who have averages above .300.

Madison Morris has stared the most games on the mound for St. John’s this season. Morris has a record of 10-12 with a 4.27 ERA in 20 starts. McKenzie Murray has been the team’s best pitcher against BIG EAST opponents. In BIG EAST play, Murray has a 4-0 record with a 3.53 ERA and 17 batters struck out in seven starts.

Providence finishes its non-conference schedule with a single game matchup against Central Connecticut on Tuesday, May 1. First pitch at Glay Field will be set for 3:00 p.m. against the Blue Devils.

Softball Loses Game Against St. John’s, 11-0
QUEENS, N.Y. – The Providence College Softball team played the final game of its weekend series against the St. John’s Red Storm on March 26. The Friars lost the final game of the series 11-0. With the loss, Providence moves to 7-16 (0-3) on the season while St. John’s improves to 15-10 (3-0).
