Providence College Softball To Host Notre Dame in Three-Game Set

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team will host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this weekend in a three-game series. The teams will play twice on Saturday, April 28 beginning at 12:00 p.m. and complete the series on Sunday, April 29 at 12:00p.m. On Sunday, prior to the start of the game, the Friars will honor their three graduating seniors Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.), Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) and Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.).

    The Friars (15-31, 6-9 BIG EAST) are looking to bounce back after a pair of two-run losses against Boston University, 5-3 and 3-1, on Wednesday, April 25. In game one, sophomore Marie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) had two hits and two RBIs for the Friars. Freshman Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif) had three hits and one RBI for the Friars in the second game of the doubleheader. Dederick leads the Friars this season with a .464 slugging percentage, six home runs and 22 RBIs. Grosso and junior Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) each have seven wins this season to lead the pitching staff.

    Notre Dame (29-13, 10-3 BIG EAST) swept Seton Hall in a Wednesday doubleheader, taking the first game of the set 8-0 in five innings, and winning the second game 5-1. The Fighting Irish are led by junior Amy Buntin with a .355 batting average, 44 hits, and 43 RBIs. Sophomore Laura Winter leads the team with 20 wins and 203 strikeouts over 187.0 innings pitched.

    With six conference games left this season, the Friars currently sit in 10th place in the BIG EAST standings, half a game behind the St. John's Red Storm. The top eight teams make it to the BIG EAST Tournament.
