Providence College will host Bryant University on Tuesday, April 20 at 4:00 p.m. at Raymond Field in the First Annual Softball Pink Out. The event, which is sponsored by Providence College and the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation, was established to promote awareness for breast cancer.
Providence (14-22, 4-7 BIG EAST) is coming off a 3-1 loss in the final game of a three-game BIG EAST Conference series against USF on Sunday, April 18 at Raymond Field. PC freshman Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) pitched a complete game and struck out five batters, while senior Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) had three hits and one run. The day before, the Friars split a doubleheader against USF. PC was defeated in game one, 2-1, but rebounded to post a 6-3 win in game two marking its first ever win over USF in 11 tries. Sophomore Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned the win as she pitched a complete game and allowed just one earned run. Revens had two hits and two RBIs, while junior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) had two hits and one RBI.
Stratton is tied for the team lead with a .333 batting average. She also leads the squad in hits (36), doubles (5) and home runs (3). Sophomore Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) also has a .333 batting average and is tops on the team in runs (23), triples (4) and stolen bases (16). In the pitcher's circle, Grosso has a 6-4 record and a 2.48 ERA, while Clauss is 5-7 with a 3.06 ERA and a team best 47 strikeouts.
Bryant (7-29, 4-10 Northeast) has won three consecutive games after a doubleheader sweep at St. Francis (Pa.) on Sunday, April 18. The Bulldogs took game one, 6-0, and completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory in game two. Bryant belted 10 hits, including three home runs as Ali Chouinard finished with three hits and one home run. Samantha Houseal earned the shutout as she pitched all seven innings, allowed just four hits and struck out two batters. In the second game, the Bulldogs broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning with three runs. Brittany Lischinsky had three hits and three RBIs, while Chouinard had two hits and three RBIs to lead the way.
Laura Bowen leads the team in numerous offensive categories including batting average (.340), hits (36), doubles (13) and RBIs (14). In the pitcher's circle, Brittany Hart leads the team with five wins, while Houseal is tops on the squad in innings pitched (85.0) and strikeouts (59).
The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, April 21 when they host UConn in a BIG EAST doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. The games will be televised by Cox Sports and will be aired via tape delay on Thursday, April 22 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
