PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College softball team will open its season on Friday, March 7 in Clearwater, Fla. at the USF Under Armour Invitational. The Friars will play five games in three days, opening with a pair of games on Friday versus Central Michigan and Fordham at 2:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively. The Friars are set to start the season after their first two tournaments (Feb. 14-16 and Feb. 28-March 2) were cancelled due to weather conditions.
On Saturday, March 8, the Friars take on Southern Illinois and Saint Joseph's with first pitches set for 4:00 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., respectively. Sunday, the Friars will square off against Boston University with the game time set for 9:00 a.m.
Providence returns junior first baseman Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.), who started all 52 games last year. She recorded a team-high in RBI (36), doubles (15), on-base percentage (.424) and walks (19). Dederick finished fifth in the BIG EAST in doubles. The Friars also return sophomore outfielder Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.), who started all 52 games last season, batting .341 and registering team-high 62 hits and 42 runs scored. Baldassari also finished in the BIG EAST's top-10 in runs scored (sixth), hits (sixth), stolen bases (third, 22), at bats (fourth, 182), and steal attempts (third, 25).
