Softball Set For Doubleheader Against CSUN

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team is set to take on the CSUN Matadors in Northridge, Calif. on Tuesday, March 6. The Friars will play a doubleheader against the Matadors, playing at 4:00 p.m. ET and 6:30 p.m. ET.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Friars have begun the season with a 3-9 record. They last played in the Louisville Slugger Tournament on March 2-4. The majority of the tournament was cancelled due to weather conditions.

Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) currently tops the Providence lineup with a .323 batting average. She is tied for the team lead in hits (10) and RBI (5) as well.  Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) is also tied for the team lead in hits and is second on the team with a .256 batting average.

Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) have also been important parts of the Friar offense. Veler has nine hits, two doubles, one triple and five RBI on the season. Compton leads the team in runs scored (6) while also tallying eight hits, one double and one triple.

Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) and Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) have been the top pitchers for Providence this season. Ramirez has a record of 1-4 with a 3.33 ERA and 16 strikeouts. Trinidad also has a record of 1-4 while posting a 2.96 ERA and 13 strikeouts.

SCOUTING CSUN:
The CSUN Matadors have a record of 8-13 to this point of the season.

The Matador offense focuses around Savannah Horvath and Megan Stevens. Horvath leads the team in batting average (.390), runs (20), doubles (7), triples (2), and home runs (7) while also recording 14 RBI. Stevens, meanwhile, has a batting average of .339 with 21 hits, three doubles, five home runs and a team leading 18 RBI.

Jillian James has been the main starter for CSUN. James has started nine games this season. To this point, she has a record of 4-6 with a 4.20 ERA, 60 strikeouts and holds opponents to a .261 batting average.

ON DECK:
The Friars will finish their spring break trip with the LMU Tournament in Los Angeles on March 8-10. Providence will take on Loyola, Florida Gulf Coast, Harvard and Southern Utah at the Loyola Marymount University hosted tournament.
