NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Providence College Softball Team was picked to finish tied for third place in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll as the league announced on Wednesday.
Providence was tied with Georgetown for third, receiving 30 points. The Friars are coming off of a 23-28-1 season last year and are led by ninth year Head Coach Kerri Jacklets. Junior first baseman, Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) returns for Providence after starting all 52 games last year. She recorded a team-high in RBI (36), doubles (15), on-base percentage (.424) and walks (19). Dederick finished fifth in the BIG EAST in doubles.
The Friars also return sophomore outfielder Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) who started all 52 games last season, batting .341 and registering a team-high 62 hits and 42 runs scored. Baldassari also finished in the BIG EAST's top-10 in runs scored (sixth), hits (sixth), stolen bases (third, 22), at bats (fourth, 182), and steal attempts (third, 25).
DePaul was picked to win the BIG EAST, receiving 48 points (six first-place votes). Creighton was voted to place second with 44 points and two first-place votes. St. John's (27 points), Seton Hall (23 points), Villanova (12 points) and Butler (10 points) round out the preseason poll.
The 2014 BIG EAST Championship is scheduled for May 9-10 in Rosemont, Ill. The single-elimination tournament will feature the top four teams. The champion will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

Providence opens its season on Friday, Feb. 14 at the Florida Atlantic "Strike-Out Cancer" Tournament against LIU Brooklyn and South Carolina. The games are scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. ET and 1:00 p.m. ET, respectively.
