Softball Defeated By No. 24 Notre Dame, 6-2, In BIG EAST Championship Quarterfinals

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by 24th-ranked Notre Dame, 6-2, Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship played at Ulmer Stadium in Louisville, Ky. With the win, Notre Dame (45-9) advances to the semifinals, while the Friars finish the season with a 22-28 record.

    Notre Dame jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning on a two-run single by Christine Lux. Providence threatened to score in the top of the second inning as seniors Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) and Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) each recorded a hit with one out, but were not able to cross the plate. The Fighting Irish then doubled their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run double by Heather Johnson.

    In the third inning, senior Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) doubled and later in the inning junior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) drove the ball to left center but Sadie Pitzenberger made a diving catch to end the inning. Lux belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to increase Notre Dame's lead to 6-0.

    The Friars got on the scoreboard with two outs in the seventh inning when Stratton doubled to left center to score Revens and sophomore Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.).

    Jody Valdivia earned the win as she pitched five innings, allowed five hits and struck out four batters. Freshman Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) started and was relieved by sophomore Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) who pitched four innings, allowed no runs on three hits and struckout three batters.
