    LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by No. 21/25 Notre Dame, 6-4, Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship played at Ulmer Stadium in Louisville, Ky. With the win, Notre Dame (45-8) advances to the semifinals, while the Friars finish the season with a 23-30 record.

    Notre Dame jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Alexa Maldonado scored from third on a throwing error and Sadie Pitzenberger drove in Kelsey Thorton on an RBI double.

    Senior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) tied up the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run homer to left-center field that brought home junior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.).

    In the sixth inning, Stratton gave the Friars a 4-2 lead with her second two-run homer of the game. Stratton now has 10 long balls on the season and 21 in her career. The Fighting Irish responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-4 lead and went on to win by the same score.

    Laura Winter earned the win as she pitched six innings, allowed four runs on four hits. Sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) started for the Friars and pitched six innings, allowed four earned runs.
