Softball Defeats Villanova, 7-5

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team defeated Villanova, 7-5, on Sunday, May 8 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. 

Villanova jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first; however, the Friars retaliated with four runs in the bottom of the first.  Junior Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) hit a single to right center to bring in one run and tie the game.  Sophomore Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) hit a one run double to take a 2-1 lead.  Freshman Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) hit a two-run single for a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first.

In the bottom of the second, Lundstrom tallied her second RBI of the day with a single for a 5-1 lead.

Freshman Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit a single through the right side in the bottom of the third for a 6-1 lead.

The Wildcats tallied three runs in the top of the fourth to make the game, 6-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, graduate student Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) registered an RBI on a ground out to shortstop that allowed senior Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) to score for a 7-4 Friar lead.

Freshman Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) started on the mound, pitched one inning, and struck out two batters.  Senior Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.) pitched 3.0 innings, allowed four hits, and struck out one batter.  Junior Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) pitched three innings, allowed three hits, and struck out one batter in the save.


 

 

With the win, the Friars finish their season 21-28 (6-14 BIG EAST).
