Softball Defeats Villanova On Final Game Of Weekend Series

VILLANOVA, PA. – The Providence College Softball team finished its weekend series against the Villanova Wildcats on Sunday, May 7. The Friars defeated the Wildcats, 10-9 in eight innings to improve their record to 23-25 (10-11).

The game proved to be a back and forth battle, as there were five different lead changes throughout the extra innings affair. Providence scored runs in the top of the 1st, 3rd, 6th and 8th inning, each time to take the lead.

Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) was the difference maker for the Friars. Portillo hit two home runs, a solo shot in the 3rd inning and a three run blast in the 6th, as well as driving in the go ahead run on a single in the top of the 8th inning. Overall, Portillo went 3-5 on the day with two runs scored as well as five RBI.

The top of the 3rd inning saw Providence explode for five runs. The scoring began with Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) hitting a two-run home run. The home run was Lundstrom’s 12th of the season and 26th of her career. Lundstrom now ranks second overall in career home runs for Providence, only behind Friar great, Rachel Bartholomew ’07. Two batters later, the Friars added another two runs when Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) blasted a two run home run to drive in Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and bring the score to 5 to 2. Portillo then followed Rurka up with a solo shot to bring the score to 6-2.

The Friars had six different batters with at least two hits in the game. Veler lead Providence with four hits while Portillo had three, and Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.), Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) Nadia Kemp (Wappinger’s Falls, N.Y.) and Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) each tallied two hits.

Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) earned the win for Providence, pitching 5.1 innings to improve her record to 5-6 on the season. McCune allowed three hits and four runs in relief of Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.).

The Friars won four of their seven series against BIG EAST opponents this year.
