Softball Splits BIG EAST Doubleheader At DePaul, 3-2, 0-2

    CHICAGO, Ill. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader against DePaul Saturday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium in Chicago, Ill. The Friars rallied for a 3-2 win in game one, but fell, 2-0, in game two.

    In game one, the Blue Demons broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Paige Peterson hit an RBI single. Providence evened the score in the sixth inning as sophomore Marie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) singled to drive in freshman Lauren Paiva (Middletown, R.I.), who pinch ran for junior Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.). DePaul responded in the bottom of the sixth inning as Bree Brown drove in a run to give her team a 2-1 margin. The Friars battled back in the seventh inning as they scored twice with two outs to take a 3-2 lead. Freshman Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) hit a two-run single to drive in seniors Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) and Jen Abrams(Reading, Mass.).

    PC senior Corinne Clauss(Davie, Fla.) also pitched a complete game, allowed just one earned run and struck out four batters to earn her ninth win of the season. DePaul's Kristen Verdun also pitched a complete game, allowed three runs and struck out 10 batters.

    In the second game, Verdun held the Friars to two hits and struck out seven batters to earn the win. The Blue Demons scored an unearned run in the second inning and added a second run in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. The Friars tried to rally in the seventh inning as Huber and freshman Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) each recorded consecutive singles, but the Friars could not score. PC senior Alicia Grosso(Baldwin, N.Y.) pitched six innings and allowed just one earned run.


     

     

    The Friars will play their season finale at noon on Sunday, May 6 at DePaul.
