Softball Defeats Holy Cross 8-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College Softball team defeated the Holy Cross Crusaders on Tuesday, May 2. With the win, Providence improved its record to 21-23 on the season.

Providence began the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) hit an RBI double to score Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) from second base. The Friars tacked on another run when Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J.) hit a single to score McCune, and take a 2-0 lead.

The Friar’s added to their lead when Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The home run was Lundstrom’s 10th of the season and 24th of her career. Lundstrom now ranks 3rd overall in career home runs for Providence. Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) followed up Lundstrom’s home run with one of her own. Providence scored a third run in the winning when Nadia Kemp (Wappinger’s Falls, N.Y.) hit a single to drive in Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) from third base and make the score 5-0.

Providence scored again in the bottom of the 4th when Lundstrom hit a sacrifice fly to score Emma Lee (Orange, Fla.) from third.

Heading into the bottom of the 6th inning, the Friars led 6-0. The inning began with Martin and Allison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) drawing walks. Lee doubled to center to drive in Martin and push Abbatiello to third. Lundstrom grounded out to the second baseman but Abbatiello broke for home to score the game winning run.

McCune pitched a complete game for the Friars, giving up no runs and only two hits in 6 innings of work. McCune now has a record of 4-5 on the season.

Both Lee and McCune had two hits apiece while Lundstrom had three RBI on the night.

Providence next plays a game against Boston College on Wednesday, May 2.
