STORRS, Conn. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Connecticut, 0-4 and 10-4, in the season finale Saturday afternoon in Storrs, Conn.

In game one, Rachael Crossin led UConn to a 4-0 win. Crossin held Providence hitless over seven innings, recorded six strikeouts and allowed two base runners. Amy DeLuca's single in the third inning scored the first run of the game, while Julianne Towers' base hit in the fourth inning plated the second run. The Huskies' Jillian Ortega and Micah Truax hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning to seal the win.

In game two, Providence scored five times in the first inning en route to a 10-4 victory. The Friars jumped out to a 5-0 lead after half an inning. Junior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) hit a double to score freshman Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) who led off with a triple. Sophomore Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) then hit a grand slam to give PC the early five-run edge. It marked Stratton's fourth home run of the season. The Huskies pulled to within, 5-1, in the bottom of the inning when Danielle Del Ponte drove in a run with a groundout. The Friars regained the five-run lead (6-1) in the third inning as Stratton collected her fifth RBI of the game with a single. Providence then added four more runs in the fourth inning as the lead grew to 10-1. Huber hit an RBI single make the score, 7-1, while senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Becker each drove in a run as they each hit a double. Stratton then capped off the inning with an RBI single. The Huskies scored three times in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 10-4, but could not get any closer.

 

 

Stratton batted 4-for-4 with one run and six RBIs, while Becker added three hits, two runs and two RBIs to lead PC's 15-hit attack. Sheehy had two hits and three runs. She finished the season with 60 hits, which ranks tied for third all-time for a single season at PC. Junior Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) earned the win as she pitched 6.1 innings, allowed one run on three hits and struck out one batter.
