Softball Falls To Boston College, 1-0, 4-0, In BIG EAST Double Header
May 2, 2004 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was defeated, 1-0 and 4-0, in a BIG EAST double header on Sunday, May 2 at Raymond Field. The Friars finished the regular season with a 34-20-1 overall record and a 10-10 mark in the BIG EAST, while Boston College improved to 30-21 and 9-9 in the conference. Providence is currently in third-place of the BIG EAST standings and will have to wait until next weekend to find out if they qualify for the four-team BIG EAST Championship. Game one featured a pitchers' duel between Providence senior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) and Boston College senior Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.). Van Dusen pitched a complete game and allowed one run on just two hits and struck out a season-high nine batters. The Eagles scored the only run of the game when freshman Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) led off the fifth inning with a home run to center field. Malandris earned the victory as she pitched seven innings, allowed three hits and recorded six strikeouts. The Friars threatened to score in the seventh inning as the first two runners reached base, but Malandris recorded the next three outs and secure the win. Freshman Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.), sophomore Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) and Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.) each had one hit for the Friars.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game en route to a 4-0 victory. Freshman Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) capped off the first inning with an RBI single to center field. After a 10-minute rain delay in the top of fourth inning, the Friars loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the inning with one out. However, Malandris, who also started the second game, was able to get the next two outs. The Eagles scored one run in the sixth inning and added another in the seventh inning on Thompson's second home run of the afternoon to complete the scoring. The Friars were led by freshman Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) as she batted 2-for-3. On the mound, Malandris was credited with her second win of the afternoon as she pitched four innings, allowed four hits and struck out two batters. Thompson pitched the next three innings and did not allow a base runner to reach base as she recorded three strikeouts. PC's Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) pitched seven innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and struck out eight batters.
