    STORRS, Conn.- The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Connecticut, 4-3, 10-0, Wednesday afternoon in Storrs, Conn.

    Providence (21-27, 5-12 BIG EAST) took a 3-0 lead in the third inning of the first game. Freshman Corinne Rubright (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) got the scoring started with a solo home run, her sixth of the season. The next batter was sophomore Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) who reached on a single down the left-field line and came around to score when freshman Mackenzie Morgan (Sulphur Springs, Texas) notched a triple. Junior Kim Pelland (Saunderstown, R.I.) then drove in Morgan with a single to left field.

    Connecticut (19-24, 6-9 BIG EAST) scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at 3-3. Julianne Towers hit a three-run homer, her 10th of the season.

    The game headed into extra innings and the Friars took a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning behind a solo homer to left field by junior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.), her ninth of the season. In game one, Abrams went three-for-five with an RBI and a run scored.

    Sophomore Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and improved to 9-12 on the season. Clauss pitched eight innings, giving up only three runs and struck out two.

    In game two, the Huskies took a 9-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Amy DeLuca, Audry Grinnell and Towers each notched two RBIs. The Huskies added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 10-0 lead.

     

     

    The Friars are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on the Eagles of Boston College at 4:00 p.m.
