CHICAGO, Ill. - The Providence College softball team was defeated at No. 23 DePaul, 8-0, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference double header. Providence fell to 24-22-2 overall and 8-10 in the league, while DePaul improved to 40-14 and 13-5 in the conference.

In the first game, DePaul jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead en route to an 8-0 victory in five innings. Sandy Vojik and Lauren Frankiewicz each drove in a run in the first inning. The Blue Demons added another run in the second, four in the third and capped off the scoring with one more run in the fourth inning. Marcy Wilus had two hits for DePaul, while Simone Ashkar had two RBIs. Pitchers Becca Heteniak and Lindsey Dean held the Friars to just one hit as sophomore Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) had a one-out single in the third inning.

The Friars led, 1-0, after four innings in the second game, but DePaul rallied to post a 2-1 victory. Senior Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when she hit an infield single to drive in sophomore Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) who led off with a double. However, the Blue Demons scored twice in the sixth inning to take the lead for good. Amber Patton tied the game (1-1) when she crossed the plate after a throwing error and Jackie Tarulli-Fisher then doubled to score the second run.

Heteniak earned the win as she pitched a complete game and struck out six batters. PC sophomore Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) pitched six innings and allowed just three hits, while striking out two batters.

 

 

The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, April 29 at 4:00 p.m. when they face Brown University at PC's Raymond Field.
