Softball Defeats Seton Hall, 8-7

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence Softball team took on the Seton Hall Pirates on Saturday, April 22. Providence won the game 8-7 to improve its record to 16-22 on the season and is 4-9 in the BIG EAST.

The Friars took the lead early in the game as they scored in the bottom of the 1st inning. Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) began the inning by drawing a walk before advancing on a fielder’s choice by Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.). Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) drove in Lee after she hit her 8th double of the year. Providence scored again after Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Veler.

Providence added to their lead in the bottom of the 4th inning. Nadia Kemp (Wappinger’s Falls, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single and advanced on a throwing error by the short stop. Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) proceeded to hit a double to straight away centerfield to drive in Kemp and put the Friars up 3-0. Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) was put in to pinch run for McCune. Flego advanced to third after Lee reached on an error by the short stop. During Veler’s at bat, Lee stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Veler drove both Flego and Lee in by hitting a double. Rurka followed up Veler’s hit with a single to put runners on the corners. Portillo hit an RBI single to shallow center to score Veler and put the Friars up 6-0.

Seton Hall cut into the Friar lead by scoring five runs in the top of the 5th inning. Providence responded in the bottom half of the inning. After Kemp flew out to right field, McCune lined a single to center. Lee hit a single to advance McCune to third. Lundstrom was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Veler took advantage of the loaded bases by hitting a double to deep centerfield. The double drove in both McCune and Lee to put Providence up 8-5.

Seton Hall attempted a late rally in the top of the 7th. The Pirates scored two runs to make the score 8-7.

Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched her 19th complete game of the year in the win for Providence. Ramirez gave up seven runs while striking out 5.

Veler led the Friar offense by going 2-2 with 2 doubles with 2 RBI.

Providence will finish its weekend series against Seton Hall with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 23. The first game will take place at 11:00 a.m. and will be followed by the second game at 1:00 p.m.
