Softball Splits Doubleheader At Georgetown

    WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Georgetown Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. Providence (15-29, 6-9) posted a 3-0 win in game one and Georgetown (19-27, 3-10) prevailed, 2-0, in game two.

    In game one, senior Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) pitched a complete game and struck out six batters to lead the Friars to a 3-0 victory. Clauss earned her seventh win of the season and her second shutout. The Friars scored the only run they would need in the in third inning when freshman Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Marie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.). The Friars added to their lead in the sixth inning when junior Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.) hit an RBI double. PC completed the scoring in the seventh inning as senior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) drove in a run. Abrams, Kiesel and senior Michelle Huber(Dana Point, Calif.) each had two hits.

    In game two, Shikara Lowe's two-run home run in the first inning gave the Hoyas a 2-0 win. Megan Hyson earned the shutout as she pitched a complete game and struck out two batters. PC senior Alicia Grosso(Baldwin, N.Y.) also had a strong game as she pitched six innings and struck out three batters. Harrell led the Friars with two hits.

    The two teams will complete the three-game series at noon on Sunday, April 22.
