PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team (30-13) swept a non-conference doubleheader against Rhode Island (7-31) this afternoon on Senior Day at PC's Raymond Field. The Friars hit three home runs and won game one, 7-5. PC also belted three more homers in a 10-0 game two win.
In game one, the Friars jumped on the board first with a one-out rally in the bottom of the second inning. Junior catcher Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) knocked a single off the bottom of the wall in right centerfield, and was followed by an RBI-double from freshman Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.). Senior Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.) followed with a single to rightfield putting runners on the corners for senior Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas). The Lone Star State native belted a three-run shot over the left centerfield fence. It was her third home run of the season, and gave PC the lead, 4-0.
Rhode Island answered with a trio of runs in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Alyssa Martino hit a three-run home run to left field which accounted for the offense. The Rams would tie the game, 4-4, courtesy a fourth inning lead-off home run down the left field line by senior Nicole Haywood.
Freshman Tanza Lewis (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) relieved senior starter Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) in the top of the fourth inning and got three outs to end the inning.
Trailing 5-4, in the bottom of the fifth inning, Providence plated a pair of runs thanks to the team-leading ninth home run by sophomore Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.). The younger Bartholomew also collected RBIs 28 and 29 on the play.
The Friars took a 2-0 first inning lead in the second game and never looked back en route to a 10-0 win. Senior Kalena Petersen
(Mission Viejo, Calif.) hit a solo home run in the second inning, while sophomore Shannon Garvin
(Fresno, Calif.) led off the fifth inning with a long-ball, a solo blast as PC increased its lead to 4-0. The Friars added six more runs in the fifth inning to complete the sweep. After junior Tara Sullivan
(Tualatin, Ore.) hit a single to drive in PC's seventh run, Karsnia hammered another three-run home run to left center to cap off the scoring.
On the mound, junior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) improved her record to 7-5 as she pitched her third shutout of the season and allowed just two hits in five innings of action.
Providence softball, winners of four straight and five of its last six, travels to Connecticut tomorrow for a BIG EAST Conference double against the Huskies. The game has been moved up a day to Friday, April 22nd due to the inclement weather expected in the region this weekend. Friday afternoon's twin bill is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
