Softball Splits BIG EAST Double Header At Villanova, 2-0, 0-1

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Providence College softball team split at BIG EAST Conference double header at Villanova Sunday afternoon in Villanova, Pa. Providence (21-19-2, 7-7) posted a 2-0 victory in the first game, but Villanova (16-23-1, 5-10) rebounded to win the second contest, 1-0. Sophomore Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) pitched her seventh shutout of the season to lead the Friars to a 2-0 victory in the first game. She allowed just five hits and struck out five batters to improve to 12-8. The Friars scored the only run they would need in the fourth inning when junior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) doubled to drive in sophomore Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) who led off with a walk. Sophomore Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) began the fifth inning with a double and eventually came around to score on a single by classmate Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) to give PC a 2-0 edge. Villanova's Nicci Ward pitched a no-hitter in the second game to lead her team to a 1-0 triumph. Ward struck out eight batters and allowed three walks in seven innings of action as she earned her fifth win of the season. PC's Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) allowed one run of five hits and struck out two batters in six and two-thirds innings of action. The Wildcats scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Kirsten Jelinski hit a two-out double to plate Eryn Teague. The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, April 23 when they travel to the University of Rhode Island for a non-conference double header.
