Softball Defeats Harvard, 8-3

April 18, 2017

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – The Providence College Softball team played against the Harvard University Crimson on April 18. The Friars defeated the Crimson 8-3 to improve to 13-22 (3-6) on the season. Harvard now has a record of 15-16 (6-6) this season.

The first four innings of the game featured a pitching dual, as neither team would let up a run. Providence broke the game open in the top half of the 5th inning. Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) began the inning by drawing a walk. Lundstrom would advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.). Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) then drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) pinch ran for Rurka. After a wild pitch advanced Lundstrom to third and Flego to second, Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit an RBI single to center to score them both. Nadia Kemp (Wappinger’s Falls, N.Y.) followed up Mulry’s single with one of her own to put runners on first and second. Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) hit an RBI double to score both Mulry and Kemp and put the Friars up 4-0.

Harvard scored three runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to bring the score to 4-3.

Providence responded in the top of the 6th inning. Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) got the inning going with a single to left field. Lundstrom then hit her team leading, seventh home run of the year to bring the score to 6-3. Veler and Rurka kept the momentum going as both hit singles to put runners on first and second for Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.). Portillo hit a triple to right center field to drive in both Veler and Rurka and bring the score to 8-3.

Providence would hold Harvard scoreless in the final two innings to take the game.

Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched a complete game to improve her record to 9-12 on the season. Ramirez only gave up two earned runs while striking out five in her seven innings of work.

Veler had three hits in the win while Lee, Mulry and Kemp each tallied two hits.

Providence returns to action for a doubleheader against Bryant University on Wednesday, April 19. The Friars will play at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
