Softball Defeated Twice At Rhode Island

    KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by the University of Rhode Island Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at the URI Softball Complex. URI rallied for a 3-2 win in eight innings in the first game and then posted a 6-3 victory in game two.

    In game one, the Friars took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when junior Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) belted her fourth home run of the season. The Friars kept that lead until the bottom of the seventh inning, but Courtney Prendergast hit an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. In the eighth inning, the Friars regained the lead (2-1) as freshman Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to score classmate Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.). However, the Rams scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to seal a 3-2 win. Junior Corinne Clauss(Davie, Fla.) pitched seven and one-third innings, allowed just one earned run and struck out four batters.

    Providence also jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game two, but URI rallied for a 4-2 triumph. Dederick hit an RBI single to give PC a one-run edge. However, the Rams scored three runs in the third inning, including a two-run double by Kelly Coker. Dederick belted her team-leading sixth home run in the fourth inning to pull the Friars to within, 3-2. The Rams responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to regain their two-goal lead (4-2). URI added two more runs in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 6-2. In the seventh inning, senior Jen Abrams(Reading, Mass.) walked with the bases loaded to cut the lead to 6-3, but the Friars could not get any closer.


     

     

    The Friars are back in action beginning at noon on Saturday, April 21 when they play a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Georgetown.
