 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a double header against Villanova on Thursday afternoon. Providence won the first game, 2-0, and dropped the second game, 3-1. Junior Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) tallied a home run in each game.

In the first game, freshman Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) pitched seven strong innings to pick up the win and give the Friars (5-23, 3-10) a 2-0 victory. The rookie fanned seven batters in the game.

Providence broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth when Dederick hit a solo shot to make the score 1-0. Freshman McKall Miller (Ashburn, Va.) gave the Friars a two run cushion with a solo home run of her own, in the bottom of the sixth, to bring the score to its final of 2-0.

Kate Poppe took the loss for the Wildcats (15-24, 3-8), going six inning while striking out seven.

Villanova was the first team to get on the board in the second game, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the third, to grab a 2-0 lead.

The Friars gained a run in the bottom of the fourth when Dederick hit her second home run of the game, to bring PC within one run, 2-1.

Villanova scored again in the top of the fifth with three hits for one run to bring its lead to two (3-1).

Providence had two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but was unable to generate the tying run.

Poppe picked up the win for the Wildcats and Huntly suffered the loss.

The Friars will play again Saturday, April 19 against Villanova to finish the home BIG EAST series. The first pitch will be at 11:00 a.m.
