The Providence College softball team rallied, but fell to Bryant University, 9-6, Tuesday afternoon at the Bryant Softball Complex in Smithfield, R.I.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning as they recorded seven hits in the frame, including two hits and two RBIs by Lauren Guy. Bryant added one run in the third inning for an 8-0 edge. The Friars got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when junior Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.) hit an RBI double to score freshman Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) who had doubled. Bryant regained its eight-run lead (9-1) with another run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the sixth inning, Providence scored three times to pull within, 9-4. Senior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) hit an RBI single in the inning, while sophomore Marie Flego (Silver Spring, N.J.) doubled and senior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) also had a hit. Abrams helped the Friars cut the lead to 9-6 in the seventh inning as she belted a two-run home run, her second of the season. However, the Friars could not get any closer. Abrams finished with two hits, two runs and two RBIs, while Kiesel recorded two hits and one RBI.
The Friars are back in action beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18 when they play a doubleheader against the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I. Both games will be televised locally on Cox Sports and will air via tape delay on April 21 (2:00 p.m.), April 22 (noon) and April 24 (7:00 p.m.).
