NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Providence College softball team lost and tied Yale in a non-conference double header played Wednesday afternoon in New Haven, Conn. The Friars were defeated, 3-2 (eight innings), in game one, while game two finished in a 6-6 tie in nine innings. The second game was halted because of darkness. The Friars moved to 18-18-2, while the Bulldogs are now 14-21-1. In the first game, Holly Gutterud hit a single to right field to drive in the winning run in the eighth inning as Yale posted a 3-2 win. The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Katie Yanagisawa scored on an error. The Friars evened the score in the third inning (1-1) as junior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) doubled to score sophomore Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) who singled with two outs. The Bulldogs regained the lead (2-1) in the fourth inning, but the Friars tied the score in the sixth inning on a home run by junior Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.). It marked Rossi's fifth home run of the season. In the second game, the Friars rallied twice to earn a 6-6 tie in nine innings as the game was called because of darkness. Yale scored three runs in the first inning capped off by a Yanagisawa two-run triple. The Friars cut the lead to 3-2 in the third inning when Sheehy hit a single to plate sophomore Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) and Garcia. The Friars took the lead (5-3) in the fifth inning as they scored three times. Revens hit a two-run triple, while Rossi drove in another run with a single. In the sixth inning, the Bulldogs responded with three runs of their own to regain the lead (6-5). Courtney Blachford tripled to drive in two runs and then came around to score on a wild pitch. The Friars sent the game into extra innings as they scored the equalizer in the seventh inning. Sophomore Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) hit a double to score Revens. Revens finished the second game with two hits, two RBI's and a career-high three stolen bases.
Junior Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) pitched all nine innings for the Friars as she allowed six runs on eight hits and posted two strikeouts. Yale used three pitchers in the second game with Rebecca Wojciak pitching the last two innings. The Friars are back in action on Saturday, April 19 when they face Rutgers in a BIG EAST Conference double header in Piscataway, N.J.
