PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College junior catcher Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) batted 5-for-7 with two home runs and five RBIs to lead the Friar softball team to a doubleheader sweep against UConn, 7-1, 4-1, on Saturday, April 15 at PC's Raymond Field. With the two wins, the Friars improved to 23-11-1 and 6-6 in the BIG EAST. The six conference wins surpasses last season's total of five BIG EAST victories. UConn fell to 15-21 and 4-8 in conference play.

In the first game, the Friars took a 3-0 lead in the third inning when they loaded the bases and freshman Mary Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) cleared them as she hit a three-run double. The Friars added four more runs in fifth inning to increase their lead to 7-0. Sophomore Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) hit an RBI single down the right field line. Pittman came around to score as Bartholomew capped off the inning with a two-run home run. The Huskies scored their lone run in the sixth inning when Danielle Del Ponte hit an RBI double.

On the pitcher's circle, junior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) earned the win as she allowed no runs on one hit and struck out one batter in four innings of action. Freshman Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) pitched three innings and allowed one run on three hits and struck one batter.

Bartholomew was one of four Friars with multiple hits as she had three. Sheehy, Pittman and senior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) all finished with two hits.

In the second game, the Huskies took a 1-0 first inning lead on an RBI single by senior Kim Castner. However, the Friars scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Bartholomew belted her second two-run home run of the doubleheader to give PC a 2-1 lead. Freshman Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) drove the other run in the inning with a single. Bartholomew drove in PC's fifth inning as she singled to right field.

Surosky went the distance for PC as she allowed one run on five hits and struck out five batters. She improved to 15-9 on the season.
