PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader against Seton Hall Saturday afternoon at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I. Seton Hall posted an 8-1 win in game one, but the Friars rallied for a 2-1 triumph in game two.
In game one, Seton Hall (19-22, 1-9 BIG EAST) jumped ahead to a 4-0 lead after half an inning. Meredith Henze capped off the inning with a two-run single. Providence (14-24, 5-7 BIG EAST) pulled to within 4-1 in the bottom half of the first inning on an RBI single by freshman Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.). In the third inning, the Pirates increased their lead to 7-1 when Henze hit a three-run home run. Seton Hall added a run in the fourth inning to complete the scoring.
Providence and Seton Hall each recorded nine hits. Dederick totaled three hits, while senior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) had two for the Friars. In the pitcher's circle, Danielle DeStaso earned the win as she struck out five batters in seven innings of action. PC senior Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) started the game and was relieved by sophomore Emily O'Keefe (Southington, Conn.) who pitched three scoreless innings.
In game two, the Friars trailed, 1-0, in the sixth inning, but scored twice in the bottom half of the sixth en route to a 2-1 triumph. Senior Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) hit a double to score freshman Juliana Thibodeau (Cohoes, N.Y.) and tie the game at 1-1. Junior Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) then hit a sacrifice fly to score Huber and give the Friars their first lead of the afternoon.
Junior Corinne Clauss
(Davie, Fla.) finished off the game in the seventh inning as she retired the side in order to earn her sixth win of the season. Clauss allowed just three hits and struck out four batters.
The two teams will complete the three-game series at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 15 at Raymond Field.
