Softball Falls in Nine Innings to Villanova, 5-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team dropped a 5-3 decision in nine innings to the Villanova Wildcats on Friday afternoon at Glay Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
-  
The Friars and Wildcats each started the game with multiple hits but were unable to convert for runs. Each team left two runners on base in both the first and second innings. Villanova left three runners in scoring position, while the Friars stranded four.

- Freshman Angela Giampolo homered to left field in the top of the third to give Villanova a 1-0 lead. It was her first career home run.

- The Friars responded in the bottom of the third. Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) led off with a double to left center. Paige Mulry (Pittsfield, Mass.) then reached first on a fielder’s choice and Lee slid under the tag to reach third. Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) then cleared the bases and made it 3-1 with her team-leading sixth home run of the season.

- Villanova cut into the Friars’ lead in the top of the fourth. Brittany Husk singled, scoring teammate Natalie Segovia to make it 3-2.

- Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) took over pitching duties in the top of the fourth inning. She relieved Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) who threw 3.1 innings, allowed seven hits and recorded one strikeout.

- The Wildcats’ Caroline Jones hit a solo homerun in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.

- Two errors in the top of the ninth led to the go-ahead runs for the Wildcats. Providence brought the game-winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but Brittney Veler flew out to right field to end the game.

ON DECK:
The Friars continue the three-game series against the Villanova Wildcats tomorrow (April 14). Games are set for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the doubleheader.
