Game One Box Score |  Game Two Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College softball team (20-11) split an in-state doubleheader to rival Rhode Island (12-14) this afternoon at the URI Softball Complex. The Rams won game one, 7-2, while Providence took game two, 8-0, in six innings.

In game one action, PC got on the board first with a run in the second inning as junior Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) knocked a lead-off home run to right centerfield. It was her third of the season.

The Rams responded in the home half of the second scoring three times including a home run by junior Alyssa Martino. After allowing four URI runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Friars would get one back in the sixth as sophomore Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) skewered an RBI-ground out to the short stop. That would be all the PC offense would muster though as junior Katie Halcomb notched the complete-game victory for her sixth of the year.

In the second game, freshman righty Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) hurled six shutout innings for the win, her fifth of the season. It also was the second shutout for the Friars this year.

After manufacturing three runs in the second inning, seniors Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) and Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) each blasted solo home runs in the third inning to give the Friars a commanding 5-0 lead. Romero finished the afternoon with two hits, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Willette tallied three hits in the contest, while junior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) had three hits and two RBIs.

Senior Tara Sullivan (Tualatin, Ore.) and Pittman each added two hits apiece in the win.

Providence softball returns to action on Thursday, April 13 at Fairfield. The non-conference doubleheader is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
