Box Score

Providence, R.I. -- The Providence College softball team swept the University of Rhode Island Rams, 4-0 and 2-1 (8 inn.), in a double header on Thursday, April 10 at Raymond Field.

In first game, the Friars got on the board early with a RBI single by freshman Elena Romero (Chulz Vista, Calif.), making the score 1-0 after one inning of play. Providence added another run in the second on a RBI single by junior Chrissy Iannolo (Syracuse, N.Y.) that scored sophomore Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.). In the top of the fourth, the Rams loaded the bases but were unable to score as Friar senior starting pitcher Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) retired the next two batters. Sophomore Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita) replaced Peterson on the mound in the fifth inning. Providence added a run in the fifth inning as Bartholomew closed out the game on the mound to complete the combined shutout. With the 4-0 victory, Peterson moved to 4-1 on the season. At the plate, freshman Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) went a perfect three for three, while Romero and Iannolo picked up one RBI each.

Both teams began the second game scoring one run in their respective half of the first inning. Rhode Island starter Jenna Thurston and Providence reliever, junior, Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) shut down each team's hitters the next six innings. Providence finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth as the Friars loaded the bases with one out. Willette then singled to left field to score sophomore Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) from third base to win the game. She finished the double header going six for seven with one RBI. With a hit in each game, Karsnia extended her hit streak to 11 consecutive games. Van Dusen went seven-plus innings to improve her record to 4-2.

Providence College returns to action on Saturday, April 12 as they play a double header at home against Rutgers at 11:00 a.m.
