PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College softball team (12-20-1, 2-6 BIG EAST) was defeated by the No. 10-11 Louisville in a double-header on Tuesday, April 9.
The Cardinals took the first game of the double-header, defeating the Friars, 16-2.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead through one and a half innings. Providence answered by tallying its first run of the game in the bottom of the second to close the Cardinals lead to three, 4-1. Louisville added one run in the top of the second and two in the top of the third to give it a 7-1 advantage headed into the bottom of the fourth. The Friars went on to tally their final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Louisville added nine additional runs to take the first game, 16-2.
Senior pitcher Corrine Clauss (Davie, Fla.) threw three innings, gave up six hits and seven runs. In addition, Clauss recorded two strike outs. Freshman Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.) took over in the fourth inning and pitched three complete innings. The freshman pitcher gave up nine hits and recorded one strike out.
Caralisa Connell threw two innings and gave up one run. Rachel Le Cocq pitched the final four innings of the game, gave up five hits and one run.
Louisvilles' Katie Keller went 2-for-2 in the first game with seven RBI. In addition, Alicja Wolny went 3-for-5 with four RBI.
Louisville defeated the Friars, 17-6, in five innings in the teams' second game of the day.
The Cardinals scored one run in the first inning off a hard hit single driven into centerfield with a runner on second, but the Friars were able to post three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Kiara Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) singled to get on base, and advanced to second off an error made by Louisville's centerfielder. She advanced to third off a sacrifice bunt hit by sophomore Megan Rollings (Marysville, Wash.), and was brought home by senior Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.). Sophomore Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) was next to get on base with a single to leftfield. Bryant and Dederick both would score before the end of the inning (3-1).
The Friars gave up three runs in the top of the second off a three-run homerun hit by the Cardinal's leftfielder, Jasmine Smithson-Willett, but then brought in two runs off singles from Bryant and sophomore Shanelle Harrell
Louisville went on to score 13 runs over the following three innings. Dederick hit a homerun in bottom of the fifth.
Junior Emily O'Keefe (Southington, Conn.) tallied the loss in game two after giving up eight runs in 2.2 innings pitched. O'Keefe was relieved by Harrell who finished the third inning, and pitched in the fourth, allowing seven runs. Amos pitched the final inning.
The Friars will travel to USF to play a three-game series this weekend. The first two games will be played on Saturday, April 13, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The final game of the series will be played on Sunday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m.
