Softball Swept At St. John's In BIG EAST Conference Doubleheader
April 9, 2001 JAMAICA, N.Y. - The Providence College softball team was swept at St. John's University in a doubleheader on Monday, April 9th. The RedStorm won 2-1 in 11 innings in game one and 2-0 in game two. In the first game, the Friars (15-15 overall/2-6 BIG EAST) scored first, when freshman pitcher Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) drove in senior thirdbaseman Nicole Nelson (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. PC's 1-0 lead was erased in the bottom of the seventh inning when St. John's (19-22 overall/3-5 BIG EAST) Lisa Tropeca opened the inning with a single down the leftfield line. She was sacrificed to second by Ann Raab and she scored when Tiffany Howerton singled to leftfield and advance to second on an error by PC's leftfielder. The two teams ended the game in the bottom of the 11th inning when Jessica Dima doubled with one out. A single to centerfield by Alesha Argeras plated Dima and gave St. John's the 2-1, game one victory. In game two St. John's scored single runs off PC starter Robyn West (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in the third and fifth inning. The Friars were held to just two hits by RedStorm pitcher Courtney Fitzgerald. The Friars return to action on Tuesday, April 10th when they host the College of the Holy Cross at 3:00 p.m. at PC's Raymond Field.
