April 6, 2003
Providence, R.I. -- The Providence College softball team was defeated twice by the Syracuse University Orangewomen, 10-2 (6 inn.) and 10-6, in a BIG EAST double header on Sunday, April 6 at Raymond Field.
In the first game, the Orangewomen got on the board early with two hits and a run in the first inning. Syracuse then scored four times in the next inning, two of those runs came on a two-out, two-run, home run by Tanya Rose. The Friars got two runs back in the their half of the third inning on a two-run home run by freshman Elena Romero (Chulz Vista, Calif.). The Orangewomen answered back though in the fourth inning with a solo home run to right field from Jennifer Orpitelli. Providence was unable to produce a rally as all three Friar batters in the final inning struckout. The game ended in sixth innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. Leading the way in the game for the Friars was Romero who went two for three with two runs batted in, including her first collegiate home run. Sophomore Nicole Bartholomew picked up the loss for Providence as she went one and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs. In the second game, Syracuse scored three runs in the top of the first and two more in the second inning to jump out to an early, 5-0, lead. The Friars loaded the bases in the bottom of the third but were unable to capitalize. After Bartholomew, who replaced starting pitcher, junior, Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.), shut down the Orangewomen in the top of the fourth inning, the Friars rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Van Dusen started the scoring by hitting her third home run of the season. Syracuse responded in the top the fifth with one run scored but were shutdown with the bases loaded by a well-timed Bartholomew strikeout. The Orangewomen then put the game away with four runs in a top of the sixth inning which included back-to-back solo home runs by Orpitelli and Switenko to make the score 10-4. Providence scored two in the seventh but could not get any closer. Romero once again led the Friars as she went two-for-four with two runs batted in. Van Dusen took the loss to make her record 3-2 on the season.
Providence College returns to action on Tuesday, April 8 as they play a double header at home against Holy Cross at 3:00 p.m.
