     INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Providence College softball team split a double header at Butler on Saturday in a BIG EAST matchup. The Friars dropped the first game 4-0 and won the second game, 7-2.
    

    In the first game, Butler (13-21, 3-4) got off to a quick start with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the first. The Bulldogs scored on a home run in the sixth to bring their lead to four. Kristin Gutierrez held the Friars (3-18, 1-6) to five hits the rest of the way to seal the 4-0 victory. Freshman Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) took the loss on the mound.

    Providence won the second game, 7-2. The Friars started the game strong with two runs in the top of the first when junior Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) singled to right center to bring in sophomores Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) and Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.).

    Both teams scored one run in the third, with PC's run coming from Luttrell again, when she grounded out to score freshman McKall Miller (Ashburn, Va.). Providence scored another run in the fifth when Miller hit a sacrifice fly to score Baldassari to bring the Friars' lead to four (5-1).

    The Friars added two runs in the sixth when junior Sarah Kitterman (Houston, Texas) grounded out and senior Kaitlyn Duval (Shrewsbury, Mass.) hustled home. Junior Lauren Paiva (Middletown, R.I.) scored on a fielder's choice bunt put down by junior Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.). Butler also scored in the inning to make the score 6-1, PC.

    Providence finished its scoring in the seventh when Paiva drove in junior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) on a double to left field. Huntly picked up the win pitching in 5.1 inning for the Friars. Allie Tarrant pitched in the loss for Butler.

    The Friars will play again tomorrow against Butler to finish the away BIG EAST series. First pitch will be at 11:00 a.m.
