PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Marist 5-2, 10-2, in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 5 at Raymond Field.

The Friars (18-7) capped off the sweep with 10-2 victory in game two. Providence trailed 2-1 in the third inning, but scored four runs in the third inning to take a 5-2 lead. Freshman Sam Pittman's RBI single tied the game at 2-2 and senior Jaclyn Treveloni's three-run home run gave the Friars the lead for good.

Providence added a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a two-run single by junior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) and classmate Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) contributed a solo home run in the fifth inning to make the score, 8-2. In the sixth inning, Willette belted a two-run home run to left field to complete the scoring. Willette finished the game with three hits and five RBIs. The game was discontinued because of the mercy rule. On the mound, freshman righthander Tanza Lewis (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out five batters.

The Friars won the first game of the doubleheader 5-0 over the Redfoxes (8-14). Senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) recorded her sixth shutout of the season. She allowed three hits and recorded seven strikeouts in the victory. The offense was provided by sophomore Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif) who had two RBIs, and also scored a run. Junior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) and sophomore Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) each had RBIs in the victory.
 

 

The Friars are back in action on Thursday, April 7 with a home doubleheader against Dartmouth. The first game begins at 3:00 p.m.
