PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated Sacred Heart University, 3-2, in an 11-inning game on Thursday, April 4. The contest was a day after the Friars lost to Yale in a three-hour, 12-inning marathon.

The Friars had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman centerfielder Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) reached first when she was hit by a pitch. Sophomore pitcher Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) doubled to left-centerfield to score Karsnia. Freshman catcher Ashlee Weatherford (Woodland, Calif.) singled home Van Dusen to put PC up, 2-0.

Sacred Heart scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the contest up and send it to extra innings. Kim Derleth led the seventh off with a single. After an out, Jamie Minieri single to put runners on first and second. Number nine hitter, catcher Katie Ross, attempted to sacrifice the runners up a base when her bunt was thrown into rightfield scoring Derleth on the error. Providence's outfielder compounded the mistake by firing the ball back into the infield and into the home dugout allowing Ross to go to thirdbase and Minieri score the tying run.

The two teams continued to battle in the 2-2 tie until the bottom of the 11th inning. With one out, PC freshman secondbaseman Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was hit by a pitch. Karsnia doubled to right-centerfield, scoring Petersen all the way from firstbase for the 3-2 win.

Van Dusen pitched all 11 innings in earning her second win of the season. She allowed eight hits and two unearned runs while striking out a career-best 14 batters.

The Friars travel to Rutgers and Villanova this weekend for BIG EAST Conference doubleheaders.
