The Providence College softball team defeated Harvard, 3-2, Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game played at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars earned their fourth consecutive victory as they improved to 13-18 overall. Harvard is now 15-9.
Providence jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning when junior Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) belted her third home run of the season. In the third inning, senior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) scored off an error to increase PC's lead to 2-0. The Crimson pulled to within, 2-1, in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Marika Zumbro. Harvard tied the game in the top of the sixth inning when pinch hitter Adrienne Hume hit a solo home run.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, sophomore Kaitlyn Duval (Shrewsbury, Mass.) walked and freshman Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) followed up with a single. Junior Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.) then hit a double down the left field line to score Duval and give the Friars a 3-2 lead. Senior pitcher Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) finished off the seventh inning to earn her fifth win of the season. She pitched a complete game and struck out four batters. At the plate, Huber led the way with two hits.
The Friars are back in action beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5 with a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader versus Pittsburgh in Providence, R.I.
