KINGSTON, R.I. -
The Providence College softball team defeated in-state rival Rhode Island, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon. The Friars scored all they would need to take the victory in the third inning, with two runs on one hit. Providence now has two victories against the Rams (7-20) this season.
Providence (2-17) got on the board first in the top of the third when sophomore Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) drove in junior Megan Rollings (Marysville, Wash.) on a single to center field. Junior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score sophomore Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) and give the Friars the 2-0 advantage.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth with PC scoring from a home run by junior Sarah Kitterman (Houston, Texas). It was Kitterman's third home run of the year. The inning ended with the eventually final score of 3-1.
Freshman Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) and sophomore Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.) pitched for the Friars, with Huntly recording the win. Ashley Dumoulin took the loss for URI.
The Friars will next travel to Indianapolis, Ind. for a BIG EAST matchup against Butler on Saturday, April 5 (doubleheader) and Sunday, April 6 (single game). The double header times are set for noon ET and 2:30 p.m. ET. First pitch for the single game is set for 11:00 a.m. ET.
